VinAI Research is a leading research lab with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Funded by Vin Group, the largest enterprise in Vietnam by capitalization, our mission is to conduct high-impact research that pushes the knowledge frontier in AI and to accelerate applications of AI in Vietnam, the Asia Pacific region, and beyond.

Headed by its founding director, Dr. Hung H. Bui (formerly of Google DeepMind), this is the first AI research lab in Vietnam created with a focus on top-tier research and publications. The lab enjoys a world-class research facility, including ample access to computing infrastructure and GPUs. In addition, it maintains active research collaboration with other top AI research labs around the world. The current research areas include machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language technologies and reinforcement learning.

Research Scientist (Vietnam) – Robotics

You are a brilliant, motivated self-starter and an extremely fast learner with top notch problem solving, and analytical skills. You have a deep sense of curiosity and innate desire to dig deep into robotics and automations with the innards of smart sensing, object tracking, robot navigation, complex and advanced, real-time control algorithms. You will help us pushing the robotics research and application frontier, discover novel control algorithms in a complex and dynamic environment. We are looking for robotics research and application skills in all aspects of autonomous AI, from calibration, perception, localization to planning, control and navigation, signaling and systems.

What you’ll do

  • You will perform high-quality research in the area of robotics. You will be supported and have the chance to collaborate with a world-class research team spanning from computer vision, deep learning to speech and NLP.
  • You will join a dedicated robotics research team with active research links to top university research labs in robotics with relevant expertise such as in reinforcement learning, imitation learning, planning and control.
  • You might need to perform research on robotic autonomy in mixed-initiative operations
  • You will lead or be part of a team to build/program complete robotic / fleet of robotic systems in-house.
  • You will perform suitable research and development activities, including some, but not limited, to the following:
    • Develop, implement, and validate suitable algorithms for intelligent robotic control systems
    • Identify and integrate vision algorithms and algorithms for autonomous navigation with robots
    • Detect and track moving objects from stationary and moving robots
    • Detect / recognize / track objects in a collaborative environment of multi-robots
    • Select robot hardware vendors, integrate robot hardware and software based on process diagrams
    • Prepare simulations for validation and visualization purpose
    • Optimize complex algorithms for computationally limited platforms
  • You will keep up-to-date with latest research results in specific areas of robotics and advanced controls. This might include performing ad-hoc analysis, hypothesis testing and presenting results in a clear manner.
  • You will participate in training and upskill programs when needed.
  • You will prepare research papers to be published in flagship conferences and journals.

What you’ll need

  • MS or Ph.D. Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with relevant research experience in mobile robotics.
  • Candidate must have expertise in one of the following areas and working knowledge in the others.
    • Data Structures and algorithms with experience of coding in Python/C/C++.
    • Robot Operating System (ROS) and implementation of robot planning/control/estimation algorithms on a mobile robot.
    • Designing and running experiments with mobile robots.
    • Familiarity with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms and/or planning and control algorithms for mobile robots.
    • Software and hardware management for a fleet of mobile robots.
  • Research ability demonstrated by publications in flagship journals and/or conferences
  • Strong communication skill
  • Excellent problem-solving skill
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment
  • Ability to understand, explain and reproduce results from research papers from top-notch conferences in robotics and closely related fields such as ICRA, IROS, CVPR, NeurIPS
  • The following expertise are advantageous:
    • Knowledge of MATLAB, Simulink (especially Control System Toolbox), LabVIEW, Python Control Systems Library
    • Experience in application areas such as Instrumentation & Control, Control Algorithms, Image Processing, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Reinforcement Learning
    • Experience with (a) Robotic software: ROS, Gazebo, MoveIt, SLAMCORE for Motion Planning, Robot Navigation (b) Robotic hardware and sensors: LIDAR, Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU), Sensor Fusion, Robot Drives, Engine Control Unit (ECU), Microcontroller Unit (MCU), Microprocessor
